Background
Acute liver failure (ALF) is a relatively rare condition, but Edinburgh is the National Centre for referral of patients with this condition in view of the life-saving role of emergency liver transplantation. ALF affects young patients and commonly develops into multiorgan failure. The most common cause are drug reactions, especially paracetamol overdose. Understanding the mechanisms of liver injury and regeneration will hopefully allow better treatments of this devastating condition.
Research Overview
