Science teaching outside the box: students with learning and other difficulties

January 2019: Paper to assist everyone who is related to science teaching, with emphasis on individuals with learning disabilities

The teaching of students with learning and other disabilities (LD) is called special education and it practically means tailoring the traditional teaching strategies in such a way, so that all students are equally included in the learning process. Science is often a particularly challenging subject to teach, and the teachers need to carefully plan the lesson in order to match all students’ special abilities.

We believe that science-related subjects offer the unique opportunity for activities, therefore we present a collection of teaching adaptations that involve hands-on work, laboratory demonstrations and the use of specially adapted educational software. The common reference point for all those activities is that they replace the traditional textbook, and the students can learn and have fun at the same time, regardless their learning difficulties.

With this paper we hope to assist everyone who is related to science teaching, with emphasis on individuals with learning disabilities. It is a summary of the strategies to remove the barriers of textbook instruction, using alternative activities.

The first author of this paper is a doctoral researcher in the Centre for Inflammation Research and this work emerged as an external collaboration with a group of education academics and teachers who focus on science teaching and software development for educational tools. The group, mainly associated with the University of Thessaly, Greece have been active on this area for several years, releasing a number of relevant publications.
