April 2018: The CIR Public Engagement Team have another successful year at the Edinburgh International Science Festival with their 'Amazing Immunology' workshop The CIR Public Engagement volunteers were out and about again over the last couple of weeks, this time taking part in the annual Edinburgh International Science Festival (EISF) at the National Museum of Scotland between 9-12 April. The team presented their 'Amazing Immunology' workshop in which participants learned basic concepts of the immune system (immunology) before participating in an activity focused on cancer immunology. The workshop was a huge success, with an overall attendance of around 80 children (mostly aged 7 to 13) and 35 adults. The children particularly enjoyed the ball-pool activity where the children took on the roles of different immune cells to detect and destroy cancerous cells. As usual 'Denny the Dendritic Cell' was a huge hit and kept children engaged. Feedback from the parents was extremely positive too, with many commenting that it was a "fantastic activity", "with a good balance of information and activities" and a "very good presentation of how the immune system works".
