August 2016: Dr Eilise Ryan has been awarded a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship Dr Eilise Ryan was awarded a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship in July 2016 to investigate "Impaired alveolar macrophage function in COPD: is the phenotype a consequence of defective cellular metabolism?". Macrophages from the airways of COPD patients have impaired phagocytosis of bacteria and apoptotic cells leading to chronic inflammation. This project will explore alterations in the metabolism of COPD alveolar macrophages, how this affects cell energetics and ultimately their ability to phagocytose. We aim to identify novel pathways for restoring metabolic function in these cells and consequently restoring phagocytosis. Publication date 25 Aug, 2016
