August 2016: Researchers have developed an improved approach to studying multiple sclerosis in mice, which has significant benefits for the animals’ welfare Richard Mellanby's experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) study reports a refined approach to inducing EAE in mice. The method uses myelin basic protein (MBP) loaded dendritic cells instead of complete freund’s adjuvant (CFA), which reduces inflammation at the injection site. This refined approach to mouse model of multiple sclerosis has significant benefits for animal welfare in that the animals have fewer unwanted side effects than previous methods.
