June 2018: The EPSRC Proteus Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration were pleased to host Tommy Sheppard, MP for Edinburgh East, at the Centre for Inflammation Research. Image Mr Sheppard was interested in the research being carried out within the group after hearing that one of his constituents, PhD student Helen Parker, won the Physics medal and overall medal at STEM for BRITAIN Parliamentary Showcase in March. During the visit, Helen had the opportunity to give him tour of Proteus' biology labs, physics labs and the Hub, which provides a shared space for the team. A demonstration of their imaging technology which is currently in clinical studies, as well as early (but promising) imaging technologies was given. One of these technologies, a fibre-based multispectral imaging system, was the focus of the poster presented by Helen at STEM for BRITAIN. Mr Sheppard was also interested to see the breadth of research being carried out within Proteus – from the development of novel imaging fibres and sensor design, to fluorescent chemistry and biological probes.
