December 2017: Dr Tom Craven has been awarded The Intensive Care Foundation Research Gold Medal for 2017. Image Dr Tom Craven, previously a PhD student with Proteus, was awarded a research Gold Medal this week. The Intensive Care Foundation Research Gold Medal is a prestigious award, given annually to a new investigator who has shown excellence in science relevant to intensive care practice. Dr Tom Craven, a Clinical Research Fellow in Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Edinburgh who carried out his PhD with Proteus at the MRC Centre for Inflammation Research, has been chosen as the recipient of the Gold Medal for 2017. He was presented with the award by HRH the Princess Royal on 6 December 2017 in Liverpool. The three award finalists were selected by a panel of judges drawn from the Research Committee, based on the following criteria: Originality and relevance to intensive care. The background and hypothesis for the work. Quality of study design/methods that have been used and how this evolved as the work progressed. A summary presentation of results that are used to support a discussion and critical appraisal of the work. Appropriate use of statistical analysis including mention of any weaknesses. Conclusions that reflect the outcome of the research and its impact on the care of the critically ill. Each finalist gave a 20-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion during the Research Forum at the Intensive Care Society State of the Art Meeting that took place in Liverpool on 4-6 December, before Dr Craven was selected as the winner.
