We largely focus on establishing the role of intrinsic mechanisms that contribute to the evolution of antibiotic resistance, fitness and survival in Gram-negative bacteria.

What makes bacteria resist antibiotics and evade the immune system? We tackle this question by studying the hidden mechanisms that allow the bacteria Klebsiella to cause serious infections by outsmarting human defences and antibiotic therapy. Our discovery of the role of the protein RamA, in modifying lipopolysaccharides (components in the outer coating of Klebsiella) provides new insights into how this bacteria alters itself to survive in the human host.
