Gastrointestinal Disorders

The study of gastrointestinal disease and how doctors and families can improve normal health and the health of children with chronic illness.

Professor David Wilson established the paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition referral service for children in SE Scotland, now recognised internationally as a leading academic and clinical centre in paediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. Childhood Crohn's disease has increased 5-fold in Scotland in the last 40 years but, despite much research, the exact cause remains uncertain. The research of Professor Wilson spans basic, translational and clinical and epidemiological research.

Another gastrointestinal disorder of concern in children is Coeliac disease. Dr Peter Gillett recently published findings that coeliac disease affects six times more children living in SE Scotland now than it did in 1990. Dr Gillett investigates the cause and epidemiology of coeliac disease. Nutrition is vital to keep children healthy, and nutrition support to prevent children with chronic disease becoming sicker.  Our GI-Nutrition team lead studies of nutrition support in many diseases, including childhood cancer.
